You run TikTok ads through TikTok Ads Manager. First open an ad account, get it approved and install the TikTok Pixel on your site. Then create a campaign, choose an objective, set the audience, budget and schedule in the ad group, and add your vertical video, copy and link at the ad level. Smart+ can automate most of the setup.
TikTok viewing habits differ from Meta's: people watch with the sound on, scroll fast and respond more to content that doesn't look like an ad. That makes creative just as decisive as setup. Below we cover both step by step; menu names describe the interface in general terms as of October 2026.
How do you open a TikTok Ads Manager account?
You open a TikTok Ads Manager account from TikTok's ad sign-up page with an email address or phone number, and the account is then reviewed automatically. The steps in TikTok's account setup guide are, in short:
- Open the sign-up page and register with your email or phone number.
- Enter the verification code.
- Create the advertiser account: Choose the country or region where your business is based and enter your business details.
- Add payment and billing information.
- Wait for review: You can start preparing campaigns right away, but ads won't go live until the account is approved. According to TikTok, most reviews take less than 24 hours.
Entering a business name consistent with your legal name and choosing the right time zone the first time saves trouble later; some account settings may not be changeable afterwards.
Why does the TikTok Pixel matter?
The TikTok Pixel is a tracking code that reports actions on your site, such as add to cart and purchase, to TikTok. Sales campaigns learn from this data. TikTok also offers the server-side Events API; because it isn't affected by browser restrictions, it's recommended alongside the pixel. The logic is the same as Meta's pixel and Conversions API pair, which we explain in our Meta Pixel and Conversions API guide.
How is a TikTok ad account structured?
TikTok ads also have three layers: campaign, ad group and ad. The ad group is TikTok's equivalent of Meta's "ad set".
- The campaign sets the ad's goal (objective) and an optional campaign budget.
- The ad group sets placement, audience, budget, schedule and the optimization event.
- The ad is what people see: the video, text, identity and call-to-action button.
Which campaign objective should you choose on TikTok?
You choose the objective based on the action you want people to take after seeing the ad. TikTok generally groups objectives into three categories: awareness (reach), consideration (traffic, video views, community interaction, lead generation) and conversion (sales, app promotion). Groupings and names are updated from time to time.
- If you sell online: The Sales objective with website conversions. Your pixel must be working and sending purchase events.
- If you collect forms: The Lead generation objective.
- If you don't have pixel data yet: You can start with Traffic to build data, but remember it finds people likely to click, not people likely to buy.
How do you run TikTok ads step by step?
A classic (manual) campaign setup goes campaign, ad group, then ad. Follow these steps:
- Click "Create" in Ads Manager to start a new campaign and choose your objective.
- Set the campaign name and budget approach. You can set the budget at campaign or ad group level.
- Choose the optimization location in the ad group. For sales, your website and the relevant pixel event (e.g. "Complete Payment").
- Set placements. Automatic placement lets TikTok distribute delivery based on results.
- Define the audience. Location, age and language are the basics. If you're new, a broad audience often allows healthier learning.
- Set budget and schedule. Choose a daily or lifetime budget. According to TikTok's budget help page at the time of writing, the campaign budget must be above $50 and the ad group daily budget above $20; also, once live, the budget type can't be changed, only the amount.
- Create the ad. Select your TikTok account as the identity, upload your video or use an existing organic post with Spark Ads, and add your ad text and destination URL.
- Preview and submit. The ad goes live after it is reviewed against TikTok's advertising policies.
What is a TikTok Smart+ campaign, and when should you use it?
Smart+ is a TikTok campaign type that uses AI to automate targeting, optimization and creative selection. According to TikTok's Smart+ help page, the advertiser provides target KPIs, creative assets, and the target geography and language, and the system takes over the rest of setup and management. There are separate Smart+ types for sales (web), app, lead generation and traffic objectives.
Smart+ makes sense when:
- You'd rather let the system handle audience and placement settings than manage them one by one,
- You have several distinct creatives (so the system has options to choose from),
- Your pixel sends regular conversion data.
A manual campaign is better when you want to see more clearly what works and why, for example when isolating a specific creative test. Automation is only as strong as the creative variety you feed it.
What makes a TikTok ad video work?
A TikTok ad that works is a vertical video that looks like native platform content, sparks curiosity in the first seconds and ends with a clear call to action. TikTok's creative best practices for performance ads currently emphasize:
- Vertical 9:16 format and at least 720p resolution.
- Use sound or music. TikTok is a sound-on platform; audio that fits trends and formats helps the ad blend into the feed.
- Front-load the hook. Introduce your value proposition in the first 3 seconds and build a strong hook within the first 6.
- Add captions and text overlays. On-screen text of roughly no more than 5-10 words per second is recommended.
- Mind the safe zone. Key text and product shots shouldn't sit under interface buttons.
- An authentic, DIY feel. Unpolished videos made with creators, employees or customers feel more natural.
- Structure: hook, selling points, call to action.
- Multiple creatives. TikTok recommends 3-5 meaningfully different creatives per ad group and adding new ones when performance drops.
Most of these principles also apply to Instagram Reels. For a more detailed checklist, see our guide on how to make video ads that convert.
How do you read TikTok ad results?
You read results through the cost of your chosen objective (e.g. cost per sale) and the creative's ability to grab attention. In the first days the system is in its learning phase; results can fluctuate, so avoid frequent setting changes during this period.
The main metrics to watch:
- Cost per result (CPA): What does one sale or lead cost?
- CTR: Is the ad interesting enough to click?
- Watch time: Do people keep watching after the first seconds? When videos are dropped early, the problem is usually the opening.
- Frequency: Too many impressions to the same people speeds up ad fatigue.
Creatives on TikTok usually have a short lifespan, so plan to add new videos regularly from the start. The way to make that sustainable is to plan organic and ad content together, which we cover in our Instagram Reels and TikTok content calendar guide.
What are the most common TikTok ad mistakes?
The most common mistake is uploading a video made for Instagram or TV to TikTok without adapting it. A horizontal video that opens with a logo and is edited for silent viewing is instantly perceived as an "ad" in the TikTok feed and scrolled past.
Other common mistakes:
- Launching a campaign with one video: If it doesn't work, you have nothing to compare. Start with several variants of the same product with different openings.
- Launching a sales campaign without checking the pixel: If purchase events don't reach TikTok, the system can't learn who to show the ad to. Before launching, confirm events appear in the event management screen in Ads Manager.
- Splitting the budget across many ad groups: Each group gets too little data and learning drags on.
- Constantly changing settings in the first days: Every major change can disrupt learning. Wait for a few days of data before deciding.
- Ignoring the safe zone: Interface elements on the right and bottom of the screen can cover price or discount text.
- Skipping ad policies: Exaggerated health claims, misleading before-and-after comparisons or restricted product categories can lead to rejection. Review TikTok's advertising policies before launch.
Note: at the time of writing, TikTok ad publishing in 14ads is still in preparation; ads are currently published to Meta (Facebook and Instagram) accounts. You can schedule the videos you produce as organic posts on TikTok.
Summary
- TikTok ads are set up in TikTok Ads Manager with campaign, ad group and ad layers once your account is approved.
- If you want sales, install the TikTok Pixel first (ideally together with the Events API).
- At the time of writing, the campaign budget must be above $50 and the ad group daily budget above $20; check current limits in Ads Manager.
- Smart+ automates setup, but results depend on the variety of creatives you feed it.
- The winning TikTok ad is vertical, sound-on, authentic and has a strong hook in the first seconds.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum budget for TikTok ads?
According to TikTok's Help Center at the time of writing, the campaign-level budget must be above $50 and the ad group daily budget above $20. These amounts can change, so check the current notice in Ads Manager when you set up a campaign. A minimum budget is not the same as a budget large enough for meaningful results.
How long does TikTok ad account approval take?
TikTok automatically reviews new ad accounts, and according to its Help Center most reviews take less than 24 hours. You can prepare campaigns while the review is in progress, but ads won't go live until the account is approved.
What is a TikTok Smart+ campaign?
Smart+ is an AI-powered TikTok campaign type that largely automates targeting, optimization and creative selection. The advertiser mainly provides target KPIs, creatives, and the target country and language, and the system handles the rest of the setup. There are separate Smart+ types for sales, app, lead generation and traffic objectives.
Do I need a TikTok account to run TikTok ads?
You can open an Ads Manager account with an email address or phone number. However, if you want your ads to appear under a TikTok profile identity and to use formats like Spark Ads, which turn organic posts into ads, you need to connect a TikTok account as an ad asset.
How long should a TikTok ad video be?
There is no strict length rule; what matters most is grabbing attention in the first seconds and delivering a clear message. TikTok recommends introducing your value proposition in the first 3 seconds and building a strong hook within the first 6 seconds. Short, single-message videos are a good starting point for testing.
